Britain plans to rejoin the EU’s Erasmus exchange scheme on Jan. 1, 2027, giving young people access to cross-border education and training, Foreign Office minister Hamish Falconer told Parliament, Anadolu Ajansı reported Tuesday.

For young people, the scheme will provide a route to courses, vocational training and practical work placements in EU countries. Falconer said applications would open in November. He said the scheme extends beyond undergraduate exchanges and urged MPs to enlist the British Council in bringing more institutions into it.

Anadolu Ajansı reported that Britain ended its participation in Erasmus in December 2020, the month the government announced its post-Brexit trade agreement with the EU. The outlet also said Britain formally left the bloc on Jan. 31, 2020, after a majority of Britons voted to leave in the 2016 referendum. Anadolu Ajansı reported that Britain and EU representatives signed the withdrawal agreement Jan. 24, 2020.
