LONDON, Oct. 17, 2016 -- Broadband World Forum 2016 - Broadcom Limited (NASDAQ:AVGO), a global innovation leader in semiconductor solutions for wired and wireless communications, today introduced the BCM6858 solution delivering 10G PON support for all PON protocols. As a follow on to Broadcom’s market leading BCM6838 and BCM6848 product families, the BCM6858 enables a 10 Gigabit non-blocking fiber-based Optical Network Termination (ONT) and home gateway capabilities to facilitate service provider’s advanced 10G PON service offerings. Supporting NGPON2, XGPON1, XGS-PON, 10G EPON, 10G Active Ethernet, GPON, and EPON, operators will enjoy the benefits of an open, standards compliant, commercial solution with extensibility to the newest protocols, speeding time to market for symmetric or asymmetric 10Gbps broadband services. OEMs benefit from a broadband platform supporting global standards and featuring Broadcom’s comprehensive software suite.
Complementing the 10G fiber WAN is a 10G non-blocking, feature-rich home gateway complex supporting multi-port 1G, 2.5G, 5G or 10G LAN networking interfaces, along with USB3, tri-band concurrent Wi-Fi, and multi-line VoIP. Managing the BCM6858 is a secure, quad-core CPU with Broadcom’s proven line rate packet-offload engine ensuring the CPU is available for future applications to lengthen the fielded product life-cycle.
“As broadband use continues to expand throughout networks and to the home, it is critical for OEMs to offer telecom providers flexible solutions with a wide range of PON protocols that will satisfy the bandwidth demands as well as the infrastructure growth required behind it,” said Greg Fischer, senior vice president and general manager, Broadband Carrier Access, Broadcom. “With its 10G PON support for all PON protocols and field proven software the BCM6858 SoC is an ideal solution for telecom providers to serve the evolving needs of carrier networks within growing fiber markets.”
Key Features of the BCM6858 SoC
- Sixth generation PON (passive optical networking) processor building upon Broadcom’s field proven architecture in the telecom broadband market
- Unprecedented level of integration includes 64-bit Quad-core CPU, multi-Gigabit Ethernet LAN ports, USB, SATA, multi-lane PCIe, SIM card reader, secure boot, and VoIP
- Proven software environment with more than 150 million xPON CPEs deployed
In conjunction with the BCM68620 PON OLT family, the BCM6858 completes Broadcom's end-to-end support for the new XGS-PON and NGPON2 protocols.
Availability
Broadcom's BCM6858 family is currently sampling. Broadcom will be demonstrating the solution at Broadband World Forum in London, October 18-20, 2016, Meeting Room #36.
