President Nayib Bukele announced Wednesday that El Salvador had launched a rescue operation for four missing aviation technicians in Haiti after their team was ambushed on Oct. 18.

El Salvador’s representative to the U.N. Security Council said the technicians were assigned to Task Force Libertad II, part of the international Gang Suppression Force (GSF). They were returning to camp when attackers used firearms and explosives against their vehicle, which caught fire.

Bukele said the operation’s goal was to bring the men home alive and unharmed. He said they had been seized after a trip to buy food. He described the Salvadoran contingent’s work as focused on medical evacuations and saving lives rather than combat.

The Salvadoran Armed Forces said clashes and security conditions had impeded access to the area and hindered the search, as covered in EconoTimes’ earlier report on the missing technicians.

Bukele referred to El Salvador’s campaign against gangs and warned Haitian gang leaders of a stronger response if the four were not returned alive.
