Apple's iPhone Duo is due to go on sale Oct. 23 in more than 70 markets, giving investors a product milestone as bull call spreads on its shares offer capped gains and fixed upfront costs.

The Options Industry Council describes a bull call spread as a pair of contracts with the same expiration. One call is purchased at a lower strike price and another is sold at a higher strike. The second contract brings in a premium that reduces the amount paid to open the position. A standard equity option generally covers 100 shares, the council says.

At expiration, the gap between the strikes sets the ceiling on the spread's value; the net profit also depends on what the investor paid. If Apple shares finish below the lower strike, the premium paid is lost in full. The position can cost less to open than buying 100 shares while still losing its entire initial payment. A dollar payoff depends on the specific strikes and option premiums.

Timing adds another constraint. The options expire, and the passage of time can reduce the position's value before then. The council also notes that the call sold as part of the spread may be assigned early. An options position alone carries no shareholder vote or dividend entitlement; exercising into shares would change that.

Apple began taking iPhone Duo preorders Oct. 16. The company plans availability in more than 70 countries and regions on Oct. 23 and in 28 additional markets on Oct. 30. It has not released preorder volume or launch inventory, meaning previously reported iPhone Duo delivery estimates do not establish how much of any wait reflects buyer orders or available stock.

Apple's most recent reported quarter ended June 27. Revenue climbed 16% from a year earlier to $109.4 billion, while diluted earnings increased 29% to $2.02 a share. Apple attributed $0.11 a share of those earnings to tariff refunds.

Apple has scheduled its fiscal fourth-quarter earnings call for Nov. 2 at 5 p.m. ET. That reporting period ended before the iPhone Duo release, so the results will not include sales from the launch.
