British Prime Minister Andy Burnham said ending the Middle East conflict is necessary to ease household cost pressures in the U.K., linking domestic affordability to the international crisis.

Anadolu Agency reported that Burnham made the remarks to broadcasters Wednesday at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting. Burnham viewed the U.S. midterm results as an opening for countries to work together on household cost pressures. Burnham also said U.S. President Donald Trump had accepted the election results after Republican losses.

Burnham said his government had prioritized living costs during his first three months in office and had started taking action. “I can't get people's cost of living pressures down until the conflict in the Middle East is resolved,” he said.

He said he would work for de-escalation and hoped the Strait of Hormuz would reopen. Burnham added that voters wanted governments to focus on issues that matter to people.

According to Anadolu Agency, Democrats took both congressional chambers in Tuesday’s election, leaving Republicans without control of Congress. The agency said Republicans had held narrow majorities in both chambers before the election.
