AUSTIN, Texas, July 26, 2017 -- CLEAResult, a leader in designing and implementing technology-enabled energy programs, in partnership with Kansas City Power & Light (KCP&L) and Nest, today received the 2017 Smart Electric Power Alliance (SEPA) Power Players Change Agents of the Year award. The companies were recognized at SEPA’s Grid Evolution Summit in Washington, D.C. for their existing smart thermostat program redesigned to focus on greater energy efficiency and demand management.

"KCP&L, with Nest and CLEAResult, demonstrated an impressive portfolio of technologies challenging the status quo and building on traditional learning in energy efficiency, demand response and distributed energy resources to achieve even smarter technologies," said judge Dora Nakafuji, director of Renewable Energy Planning at Hawaiian Electric Company and SEPA's 2016 Solar Champion. "Their triumvirate has the ultimate do-it attitude."
Now in its ninth year, the SEPA Power Players Awards recognize utilities, their industry partners, individuals and other stakeholders on the front lines of energy transformation in the United States. CLEAResult, Nest and KCP&L were awarded the Change Agents of the Year award for creating a smart thermostat program that shifts the paradigm of how electric utilities, program implementers and technology partners engage with shared customers, which was accomplished while also empowering customers and leveraging emerging technology.
“The SEPA Change Agents of the Year award further validates our continuous efforts to provide our customers with new and easier ways to earn both home and business energy savings,” said Kim Winslow, director of energy solutions at KCP&L. “We are thrilled to receive this award along with our great partners, CLEAResult and Nest.”
“CLEAResult is honored to receive the SEPA Change Agents of the Year award in partnership with Nest and KCP&L,” said Barry Ledford, program manager at CLEAResult. “We strive to continually offer our clients new and innovative ways to save energy and we’re so pleased that this smart thermostat program has saved such significant amounts of energy, helping both the utility and its customers.”
As of January 2017, the smart thermostat program had completed a total of 8,059 thermostat installations – double its original goal. Pre-evaluated savings for the program are estimated at 10 MW of load reduction and 3.7 gigawatt hours of energy savings in nine months.
“KCP&L, Nest and CLEAResult are creating initiatives that will help drive the industry forward and benefit both customers and the grid,” said SEPA President and CEO Julia Hamm. “They’re collectively figuring out how to implement projects necessary to transition the electric power sector to a clean energy future.”
