COP31’s agenda will put artificial intelligence in weather forecasting alongside discussions of observation financing, connecting forecast technology with the capacity to gather weather data.
The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) and Copernicus schedule a session titled “Forecasting the Future: AI, Weather Prediction and National Preparedness” for Wednesday, Nov. 11. The Economist is organizing the event, which lists Carlo Buontempo, Director of the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S), as a participant.
A separate event on Monday, Nov. 9, will focus on the Systematic Observations Financing Facility (SOFF). ECMWF Director-General Florian Pappenberger is listed alongside the Turkish State Meteorological Service and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).
SOFF says countries have unequal capacity to collect weather observations, and that observations from less-resourced countries can improve forecasts worldwide. The facility’s Wednesday, Nov. 11, roundtable builds on Spain’s call for sustained financing at COP29, SOFF says.
The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) lists COP31 in Antalya, Türkiye, from Monday, Nov. 9, through Nov. 20.
