Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s office announced a strategic partnership with Türkiye on Friday, including a defense agreement intended to support Canadian jobs, exports and security ties with NATO.
The defense memorandum of understanding is designed to connect companies in the two countries. The Prime Minister’s Office said the arrangement is intended to support Canadian employment and create export opportunities, while advancing Canadians’ security and the NATO alliance.
The partnership is supported by a three-year action plan. Ottawa linked the effort to changing global trade and security conditions, saying Canada wants to build strength at home through partnerships with reliable partners. The governments signed a Statement of Intent on Defense Cooperation in July 2026.
The announcement follows Canada’s broader effort to negotiate a free trade agreement with Türkiye, outlined in earlier coverage of its trade push with Türkiye. The first round of negotiations is scheduled for Nov. 30-Dec. 4, 2026, in Ankara.
