China said it is ready to work with Serbia’s next government after projections showed a student-backed list winning a majority in the 250-seat National Assembly.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun stated Beijing’s position Monday, Anadolu Agency reported. Guo said China respected Serbian voters’ choice and aimed to build trust through a reciprocal relationship with the next administration.

In a later projection based on 96% of its sample, the Center for Free Elections and Democracy (CeSID) estimated 140 seats for “Student List – Students Win” and 103 for “Aleksandar Vucic – United Serbia.” The Assembly selects Serbia’s government, making the projected balance relevant to formation of the next administration. The figures are projections, not certified results, and do not establish that a new government has been formed.

Aleksandar Vucic conceded defeat in Sunday’s election, Anadolu reported. The vote came after months of student-led protests, the agency reported.
