Orlando, Fla., June 27, 2017 -- The Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA) presented Christopher Johnson, FHFMA, with the 2017 Frederick C. Morgan Individual Achievement Award. Johnson, a Fellow of HFMA, is the 59th recipient of this award, which honors career-long contributions to HFMA and to the healthcare finance profession.

“Chris Johnson’s contributions to both HFMA and his community are truly inspirational,” said HFMA President and CEO Joseph J. Fifer, FHFMA, CPA. “Chris embodies the values of service and leadership that are core to our association and our profession.”
Johnson began his healthcare career as a hospital admissions clerk immediately after high school graduation and worked his way up through several managerial positions to the executive level. He is currently vice president of revenue cycle management—regional facilities, at Carolinas HealthCare System, based in Charlotte, N.C., where he has been employed since 1998.
Since joining HFMA in 1987, Johnson has served HFMA in many roles at the chapter, national, and regional levels. At the chapter level, his service culminated in North Carolina Chapter president in 2001-02. During his tenure as president, the chapter received 10 national awards. Johnson has continued to take an active role in the chapter since then as a member of several committees and a proctor for certification exams. At the national level, Johnson spent six years as a Chapter Advancement Team member and has also served as chair of the Board of Examiners, chair of the Patient Financial Services Specialty Group, and a member of the National Advisory Council. At the regional level, Johnson was Regional Executive for Region 4 in 2005-06. In 2007, he joined HFMA’s Mid-Atlantic Planning Committee, which brings all five chapters of Region 4 together for education and networking, serving as chair in 2009-10 and 2016-17.
Johnson is a recipient of multiple chapter awards, including the Follmer Bronze, Reeves Silver, and Muncie Gold Merit awards, and the Founder’s Medal of Honor. He also received the North Carolina Chapter’s John H. Ketner Award in 1999, in recognition of extra effort both in time and quality of work toward the betterment of the chapter. In addition to his service to HFMA, Johnson has volunteered extensively in his community. He served his local church as a member of the Finance Committee for several years, including three years as Chair. He has also participated in church-sponsored mission trips to assist with disaster relief. Johnson serves on the Advisory Council for the College of Health, Human Services, and Science at Ashford University, He is a current board member of the Rutherford County Habitat for Humanity and a former board member of the Norris Public Library.
Johnson holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Montreat College, Montreat, N.C. He earned his Certified Healthcare Financial Professional designation from HFMA in 1996 and became a Fellow of HFMA in 2001.
The Frederick C. Morgan Award was presented during the Association’s annual conference in Orlando on June 26.
