On July 30, 2026, a serious seed-generation vulnerability in Coinkite's Coldcard firmware set off a major security crisis. A configuration flaw allowed devices across the Mk3, Mk4, Mk5, and Q series to bypass hardware true random number generators, thereby compromising entropy to expected levels. Using this flaw, automatic attackers carried out methodical offline key computations in three organized waves across more than 4,500 addresses, depleting more than 1,367 BTC (worth between $89M and $100M+).
The ensuing anxiety set off an unparalleled burst of on-chain activity, so 2024's late Bitcoin's most active day. Daily active addresses soared toward 1 million as self-custody holders raced to move money off compromised keys; small-value transfers reached 39,600 BTC, a level not seen since the FTX collapse. Users briefly placed over 7,300 BTC on centralized exchanges in a rare "reverse FTX" action to preserve their assets and address local hardware dangers.
To stop the problem, Coinkite published urgent firmware patches to correct the random generator routing. Still, users must create an absolutely fresh seed phrase on updated firmware, or manually create entropy with dice rolls, and promptly move any leftover money to pristine addresses because device updating does not correct previously created keypairs.
