Colombian authorities detained eight people sought by the United States in extradition cases involving Puerto Rico and New York, including a man accused of laundering drug proceeds with virtual currencies.
The Fiscalía General de la Nación, Colombia’s national prosecutor’s office, said seven detainees are linked to a Puerto Rico case. Nassim Orfale Vásquez, the eighth, was detained in Barranquilla in connection with a separate New York matter.
A federal case in New York’s Southern District accuses Orfale Vásquez of laundering drug proceeds with virtual currencies.
The Fiscalía named Bogotá, Barranquilla, Cajicá and Maicao as locations for the operations. Six people linked to the Puerto Rico case were detained Wednesday, Oct. 21. Juan Daniel Arenas Uribe, also linked to that case, had been detained Oct. 14, one week earlier.
