Coloplast’s new €100 million factory in Portugal has started making continence-care products, expanding its European production network at a site expected to employ more than 800 people over time.

The company inaugurated the two-floor facility in Felgueiras on Oct. 29. It spans 50,000 square meters and represents an investment of about €100 million, Coloplast said. The company said more than 300 people had joined its local operation before the opening and projected that its regional workforce would eventually exceed 800.

Planning began in 2021, and construction started in summer 2024, according to Coloplast. Production was running by the inauguration, a little more than two years after construction began. The company cited growing global demand for continence-care products as a reason for expanding output.

Coloplast said the added capacity will allow it to meet targets in its current 2030 strategy without building another manufacturing site during that period. The company said Europe is where most of its users are today and expects demand for its products there to grow.

The new plant joins a manufacturing network that includes high-volume facilities in Costa Rica, China and Hungary. Coloplast also has specialized production in Iceland, Sweden, Germany, France and the United States, plus an innovation and pilot plant in Denmark.

Allan Rasmussen, Coloplast’s executive vice president of global operations, said Portugal’s skilled workforce, competitive costs and renewable electricity supply informed the location choice. He said the factory broadens the company’s European footprint, which Coloplast said is concentrated in Hungary.

AICEP – The Portuguese Trade & Investment Agency helped Coloplast establish the site. AICEP President Ana Casaca said the project is expected to create skilled jobs and strengthen Portugal’s industrial ecosystem.
