A wind turbine has many rotating parts and balancing them to mitigate harmful vibrations is a considerable challenge. The conventional factory balancing processes are expensive and time-consuming and do nothing to address the imbalance that occurs when a machine is in service. In the case of wind turbines, rotating components often become out of balance because of shrinkage, thermal cracking, debris/ice deposits, corrosion, wear and tear and many more factors.
Even a small mass imbalance can create violent vibration, especially at high rotational speeds. If the vibration peaks above an allowable limit, the wind turbines are shut down and may have to be serviced. Vibration is essentially wasted energy that will wear rotating parts and weaken the structure. Bearing wear, loose fasteners, and bent shafts are all signs of excessive vibration related problems that require costly service and repair.
Comerton has developed a unique solution to the vibration problems in wind turbines and other machines with high-speed rotating parts. The Company’s proprietary Automatic Balancing Technology ("ABT") is a mechanical device used to automatically balance the high-speed rotating parts of a wind turbine to produce less vibration, resulting in more energy efficient operation.
ABT’s ability to self-adjust a wind turbine to constant imbalance changes during operation could potentially eliminate laborious and time-consuming balancing processes, thus saving balancing costs in the factory and rebalancing and other maintenance costs in situ.
By implementing ABT, wind turbines can remain balanced during operation and several benefits can be realized, including: reduced vibration, improved energy efficiency, reduced noise emissions, greater power output, lower maintenance costs and less mechanical wear. The technology would also improve balancing precision potentially allowing the wind turbine to spin faster, therefore generating even more power.
The ABT system has been successfully implemented on a small-scale system representing a simplified version of a wind turbine. The prototype ABT system running on unbalanced motors reduced vibration levels by up to 45% when compared to a factory balanced motor. To achieve this significant performance improvement, the ABT system incorporates a proprietary movable compensating mass that dynamically and accurately adjusts itself to changing mass imbalances without manual adjustments. This innovative and revolutionary compensating mass design is a fundamental feature of ABT.
The Company believes ABT is suited for smaller higher speed rotating applications. Faster rotating small conventional wind turbines and many vertical axis wind turbines would be ideally suited for ABT. Comerton is currently developing a full-scale original design prototype vertical-axis wind turbine incorporating ABT.
