On Thursday, Oct. 22, Crypto.com announced the appointment of Mohammed Mortajine as chief compliance officer while a House committee sought records on safeguards for prediction markets, a newer use of its platform.
His resume includes senior posts at Western Union, ACI Worldwide and Paysafe. More than 200 countries and territories fell within the scope of compliance programs he led, supported by teams in several jurisdictions. He said, “I’m excited to join at this moment.”
Antonio Alvarez left Crypto.com’s compliance operation before Mortajine’s appointment. Binance said in August that Alvarez was due to serve as a deputy to Binance Chief Compliance Officer Noah Perlman. Crypto.com’s range includes digital assets and traditional financial services, along with hybrid products; prediction markets are a newer use.
The U.S. House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform sent its Sept. 29 letter seeking Crypto.com records from Jan. 1, 2024, onward. Requested topics included customer identity checks and controls on access by location, plus the monitoring of suspicious or anomalous trading. The committee requested a response by Oct. 13. The request did not amount to a ruling on whether Crypto.com had broken the law.
