Cryptocurrency exchange Gatecoin launches withdrawal platform, re-launch date undecided

Gatecoin, the Hong Kong based cryptocurrency exchange, launched the withdrawal platform on May 28, enabling clients to withdraw their funds in BTC, DGD, DAO, HKD, USD and EUR. Earlier this month, the exchange it lost ETH 185,000 and BTC 250 (equivalent to USD 2 million) in a hot wallet breach.

CEO Aurélien Menant made the announcement in a new Reddit post. While providing update on securing The DAO tokens, he pointed out the terminations of two members, who were responsible for the breach.

“Over the past two weeks, our technology team has been focusing on ensuring the security of DAO token withdrawals following the end of The DAO creation phrase. They have been working at limited capacity due to the terminations of two members, who were responsible for the breach, hence the delay in relaunching a withdrawal platform. We can now confirm that all DAO token withdrawals are secure as of 5pm HKT (GMT+8)”, Menant said.

To facilitate speedy reconciliation for the stolen ETH funds, Gatecoin is issuing a USD 3 million bond. To that end, Menant said several investors are participating in the bond sale and is looking forward to further participation from other interested parties. He said that Gatecoin still has potential investors for its Series A.

The detailed blog post mentions the procedure users need to follow to withdraw their BTC, DGD, DAO, and fiat currency funds.

Regarding the re-launch of the trading platform, Menant said:

“The only objective of the Gatecoin team right now is to ensure that all of our clients can withdraw the funds they held on our exchange prior to the hot wallet breach. This means all of our efforts are focused on fund raising to redeem the stolen ETH deposits and ensuring the security of our withdrawal platform.

“In the meantime, our developers will work on rebuilding our platform from scratch with the intention of re-launching the exchange with new features on a ludicrously secure infrastructure’.

He added that until ETH withdrawals are enabled, the exact date of Gatecoin’s re-launch could not be confirmed.

In an earlier update on the matter, Menant announced a bounty of 25% and lifetime free trading on Gatecoin for the return of any ETH and BTC that was stolen.
