The Democratic Republic of the Congo’s National Institute of Public Health (INSP) reported 10,060 confirmed Ebola cases as of Oct. 25, while Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) discharged its last confirmed patients at Mongbwalu amid ongoing transmission.

The national tally covered eight provinces and included 4,887 deaths, INSP said. Ituri province, where Mongbwalu is located, accounted for 7,211 confirmed cases and 3,370 deaths.

MSF said the patients had recovered before they were discharged. No confirmed cases remained in beds at the Mongbwalu facility for the first time since the outbreak was declared in May. MSF reported that other parts of the country were still recording dozens of new cases daily.

Anthony Kergosien, MSF’s emergency coordinator in the country, said, “The outbreak is not shrinking, it is moving.” MSF’s response update lists 65 beds at the Mongbwalu site, which cares for people suspected of having Ebola as well as confirmed cases.

Euronews reported that a video MSF posted Oct. 28 showed staff and local residents celebrating outside the center.

The World Health Organization says the outbreak is caused by Bundibugyo virus and was declared May 15, 2026. WHO counts it as DR Congo’s 17th Ebola outbreak since the virus was identified in 1976. The agency says no vaccine is licensed and no specific treatment is approved for this strain.
