Democratic gains in Congress could open a route to new Ukraine aid legislation, though President Donald Trump could veto a bill and an override would require a two-thirds majority.
NDTV reported that Democrats won majorities in both chambers in the Nov. 3 midterm elections. Brandon Conradis, an editor at Bloomberg Government, told Deutsche Welle that Democrats could seek legislation to increase aid to Ukraine. NDTV said some Republicans would need to join Democrats for a veto override.
The election could affect U.S. policy toward Kyiv. NDTV contrasted financial and military support provided under President Joe Biden after Russia’s 2022 invasion with reduced aid under Trump.
NDTV reported that three-party talks were scheduled for the week after the election. It also said Trump might meet Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping at a summit in China later in November. The outlet assessed that the election setback could diminish Trump’s standing with the two leaders.
