When the next U.S. Congress convenes Jan. 3, Democratic majorities in both chambers will begin their terms, shifting leadership and shaping committee assignments for the two-year session.

The U.S. Senate says the next Congress is scheduled to convene at noon ET Jan. 3, 2027, unless a law changes the date.

Party conferences often determine leaders and committee assignments before the new Congress begins, according to the Senate.
