Deutsche Bank, Germany’s largest bank, is preparing to launch a cryptocurrency custody service in the coming weeks, marking a significant expansion of its digital asset operations. The initiative will initially support major cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH), as the financial institution strengthens its presence in the growing blockchain industry.

Gerald Podobnik, co-head of Deutsche Bank’s corporate banking division, revealed the plans during the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank meetings in Bangkok. The bank intends to introduce its crypto custody services in Germany before expanding into major Asian financial markets by 2027.

The upcoming service will primarily target institutional investors and corporate clients rather than individual cryptocurrency traders. Deutsche Bank will provide secure storage and management of digital assets, including cryptocurrency wallets and private keys, eliminating the need for businesses to develop their own custody infrastructure.

Alongside Bitcoin and Ethereum, the bank previously identified stablecoins such as USD Coin (USDC) and Euro Coin (EURC) among the digital assets it plans to support.

Deutsche Bank also intends to introduce fiat-to-stablecoin conversion services, allowing institutional customers to exchange traditional currencies for stablecoins and convert them back into fiat money. However, these conversion capabilities will become available after the initial custody rollout.

Beyond cryptocurrency custody, Deutsche Bank is advancing several blockchain-based financial services, including tokenized bank deposits and digital bond issuance.

Tokenized deposits represent conventional bank deposits recorded on blockchain networks, potentially improving transaction efficiency and settlement processes. Meanwhile, blockchain-based bonds could streamline debt issuance, reduce administrative complexity, and accelerate securities settlement.

Podobnik emphasized that Deutsche Bank views blockchain technology as a complement to existing banking infrastructure rather than a replacement for traditional financial systems.

The expansion forms part of Deutsche Bank’s broader corporate banking growth strategy, which targets an 8% compound annual revenue increase through 2028.

By combining cryptocurrency custody, stablecoin services, and tokenized financial products, Deutsche Bank aims to strengthen its position in institutional digital asset banking while responding to growing corporate demand for blockchain-powered financial solutions.
