Fintech company Metallicus has launched an alpha version of DogecoinVM on mainnet, introducing a payment layer designed to make Dogecoin transactions significantly faster without altering the cryptocurrency’s underlying network.
Metallicus CEO and Dogecoin Foundation board member Marshall Hayner said the technology makes DOGE transactions about 300 times faster. The development addresses a scalability challenge highlighted by Elon Musk in 2021, when he argued that Dogecoin needed substantially higher transaction throughput to become practical as a global payment system.
Rather than modifying the Dogecoin Core protocol, Metallicus developed DogecoinVM as an independent parallel layer built using Metal Blockchain infrastructure. Hayner stressed that the system does not introduce a separate cryptocurrency or change Dogecoin Core.
The architecture also preserves Dogecoin’s existing UTXO model and maintains compatibility with current wallets. Users can continue using their existing private keys and standard “D”-format Dogecoin addresses, eliminating the need to migrate funds to new wallets.
DogecoinVM achieves its speed improvements by using the Snowman Proof-of-Stake consensus protocol instead of Dogecoin’s energy-intensive Proof-of-Work mechanism. According to Metallicus, transaction finalization can occur in roughly 0.15 to 0.25 seconds, while throughput is no longer constrained by the same strict block-size limitations affecting the base network.
The payment layer operates through a two-way bridge between Dogecoin and DogecoinVM. Native DOGE is locked on the original Dogecoin blockchain, while an equivalent collateral-backed version is issued on DogecoinVM at a 1:1 ratio. Users can then transfer the represented DOGE through the faster network and withdraw their assets when needed.
The launch could expand Dogecoin’s potential beyond its meme coin origins by improving its suitability for everyday payments and fintech applications. Metallicus is also positioning the infrastructure for broader payment integrations, potentially bringing DOGE closer to the high-speed transaction capabilities Musk previously argued were necessary for widespread adoption.
