A sheriff’s deputy died after a Tuesday shooting at a home in Spokane County, Washington, bringing the death toll to four, the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office said.

Sheriff John Nowels said the woman told a neighbor her brother had shot her. Deputies arrived at about 5:30 p.m. ET (2:30 p.m. local time). The woman was hospitalized with injuries described as non-life-threatening.

The sheriff’s office said the suspect had an active felony warrant and authorities believed there might be other victims. As deputies and SWAT team members approached the home, they were met with gunfire that critically injured two deputies. Other deputies returned fire while trying to move their wounded colleagues to safety, the office said.

One deputy later died. The sheriff’s office said the other deputy remained on life support and was not expected to survive. Nowels described both as young SWAT team members and said the deputy who died had a wife and two children.

Nowels said responders found one person dead inside the home and another in the yard; he also confirmed the suspect had died. The investigation is examining the shooting and its possible cause.
