Police in Ebonyi State reported one death and three people being treated after a distress call in Amaezekwe, while a state assembly candidate said gunmen had attacked his convoy there.
Superintendent of Police Joshua Ukandu, a spokesperson for the Ebonyi State Police Command, said officers were sent to the community after the command received a call at about 4 p.m. WAT (UTC+1) Thursday, Oct. 22, 2026. They found four people with gunshot wounds and a burned vehicle, he said. One of the wounded people later died at a hospital; the other three were receiving treatment. The News Agency of Nigeria reported Ukandu’s account.
Rollins Ovu-Unata Offia-Nwali, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate for Ezza South Constituency in the state House of Assembly, said in a Facebook statement that armed men attacked his convoy on its return from the community. He said he and his team were safe, his Toyota Hilux had burned, and he had been told of casualties among the attackers.
The Sun and Tribune, citing unnamed security sources, reported that two suspected attackers died in an exchange of fire involving the candidate’s security team. The Cabal cited an unnamed eyewitness for a different allegation: that security personnel with the convoy fired on residents riding in a tricycle, killing two and injuring three. The outlet also reported that community youths later burned a vehicle described as abandoned.
Ukandu did not identify the four people found with gunshot wounds or say who fired or burned the vehicle. Tribune separately reported that police had begun an investigation.
