Authorities’ earlier examination of alleged Venezuelan campaign funding provides context for Ecuador’s Laberinto case, which probes how Luisa Gonzalez’s 2023 presidential campaign was financed, Al Jazeera reported.

Ecuador’s Attorney General’s Office said investigators are examining alleged inconsistencies in contributions to the campaign and whether the funds had a lawful source. Gonzalez has denied wrongdoing.

Al Jazeera said local media reported that Gonzalez was detained Thursday in Canuto, a rural town in western Ecuador. EconoTimes previously covered her arrest and the office’s initial account in its earlier report. Ecuador’s local elections are scheduled for Nov. 29.
