After Israel’s Oct. 27 vote, opposition leader Gadi Eisenkot is projected to receive 67 recommendations, 21 more than Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, with President Isaac Herzog preparing to designate a lawmaker to form a government.
United Torah Judaism representatives told Herzog that the party would recommend no candidate for prime minister, according to Anadolu Agency. The party’s seven seats reduce Netanyahu’s expected total from 53 to 46, the agency reported.
The party left open the possibility of backing a candidate who meets its demands on Torah study and military-service arrangements, Anadolu reported. Yashar and other opposition parties had already backed Eisenkot, The Times of Israel reported. EconoTimes previously covered the consultations with Herzog.
Recommendations do not by themselves determine who will serve in the next cabinet. Herzog is expected to designate a lawmaker in the coming days. The designee will have 28 days to form a government, with a possible 14-day extension, Anadolu reported.
