Elon Musk’s Boring Company has secured $3 billion in a Series D funding round, lifting the tunnelling startup’s valuation to $23 billion as it pushes ahead with underground transportation projects in the United States and international markets.
The funding round was led by the United Arab Emirates and affiliated investment entities, The Boring Company said Wednesday. Other participants included existing and new investors such as Vy Capital, Sequoia Capital, Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), Temasek, Human Capital and Valor Equity Partners.
The fresh capital will help accelerate development of The Boring Company’s expanding tunnel network, including the Vegas Loop in Las Vegas, the Music City Loop in Nashville and the planned Dubai Loop. The company said its partnership in the UAE could eventually result in more than 150 kilometers of underground tunnels.
The financing marks another major step in Musk’s effort to develop underground transportation systems designed to reduce congestion in densely populated cities. Over the past two years, The Boring Company said it has evolved from operating a single Loop network into managing a multi-city tunnelling program.
Its projects now involve construction across different geological conditions, ranging from soft soil to hard rock, providing a broader testing ground for the company’s tunnelling technology.
A key part of the expansion strategy is The Boring Company’s Prufrock tunnelling machines. The startup says the equipment, combined with autonomous construction technology, can increase tunnelling speeds while reducing reliance on the large launch infrastructure traditionally required for tunnel-boring machines.
Musk founded The Boring Company in 2016 with the goal of addressing urban traffic congestion by moving transportation underground. The new $3 billion funding round gives the company additional financial resources to scale its technology and advance major projects across multiple cities.
With a $23 billion valuation and growing backing from global investors, The Boring Company is positioning its Loop networks and automated tunnelling technology for a broader international expansion.
