Enphase Energy, Inc. and Infineon Technologies AG said Oct. 26 that tested 900 V gallium nitride switches are entering transformer prototypes aimed at reducing the electrical equipment needed by AI data centers.

The bidirectional switches have cleared testing but still need production qualification, Enphase said. They incorporate technology from Infineon’s CoolGaN portfolio, and Infineon contributed engineering expertise to their development.

Enphase is developing the IQ Solid-State Transformer to convert medium-voltage alternating current into 800 V direct current for computing racks. The company says denser AI computing loads and a shift toward 800 V power distribution are driving the project. It expects the design to reduce electrical infrastructure and free floor space for data center operators.

The 900 V rating extends the companies’ work beyond 650 V devices. Enphase and Infineon say the higher-rated switches could reduce the number of inverter units needed for a medium-voltage feed. They expect fewer switches, lower power losses and lower costs.

Infineon said in November 2025 that it provides GaN technology for Enphase’s IQ9 Series Microinverters. Enphase also sees potential for the 900 V devices in commercial solar inverters serving 480 V systems in the United States and 400 V systems elsewhere.

In September, Enphase said it was building 4 kW transformer power modules in Texas for racks designed to reach capacities of up to 5 MW. Enphase has not specified which switches its planned rack demonstrations will use. It expects full-system demonstrations of IQ SST racks in November 2026 and plans customer pilots for 2027.
