The Ethereum Foundation postponed Glamsterdam’s Hoodi testnet activation so developers can assess EIP-8037’s effects on deployed code. The review covers 13 real contract cases, and more contracts are scheduled for examination this week.
EIP-8037 changes gas accounting. Some contracts’ gas-counting logic may underflow — fall below zero — and revert a transaction. Other code may miscalculate gas consumed during a call and budget too little. A changed remaining-gas balance could also send execution into an unintended code path even when a transaction appears successful.
The activation had been scheduled for 1:42:48 p.m. ET (17:42:48 UTC) Monday, Oct. 26. The Foundation has not announced a new date. It said Ethereum mainnet users and Ether (ETH) holders need not take action because of the delay, as EconoTimes reported in its earlier coverage of the postponement.
More contracts are scheduled for examination during the current week. The review could draw in application developers, core developers, auditors and node operators. A specification change remains a possible outcome in the most serious scenario.
