Ethereum’s 2029 Quantum Target Is Separate From Drake’s Broader 2028 Hope

Drake’s hope includes post-AI work; the Foundation’s self-imposed December 2029 target addresses quantum resistance across three protocol layers.

At Devcon 8 in Mumbai on Tuesday, Justin Drake, an Ethereum Foundation researcher, voiced hope for Ethereum’s full post-quantum and post-AI transition by December 2028, a broader aim than the Foundation’s 2029 quantum-resistance target.

Execution, consensus and data layers all fall under a self-imposed December 2029 quantum-resistance target in the Ethereum Foundation Protocol Cluster’s Sept. 7 plan. Drake’s remarks did not revise it.

On the execution layer, the first milestone would link leanDA sampling and leanSPHINCS transactions with a consensus heartbeat. The proposed fork sequence could change, with full quantum resistance set for a later phase.

The draft registry for validator and builder keys covers consensus alone; the Foundation’s broader target includes execution and data as well.

The Foundation plans a further review of quantum progress in January 2027.
