Residents of a displacement camp in Ethiopia’s Amhara region told Addis Standard that a Thursday drone strike killed 16 people and wounded 22, while other accounts gave different death tolls.

The Abay Times said one resident put the death toll at up to 10, while sources cited by another broadcaster reported at least 17. It also cited a Telegram channel relaying radio coverage that reported 14 dead and 22 wounded. The Abay Times said no party had issued an official statement about the attack by the evening of Oct. 29.

Residents told Addis Standard that those killed included three pregnant women, an eight-year-old girl and students. A witness told Addis Standard that strikes hit the camp five or more times, about 15 minutes apart, as displaced people took shelter inside.

The Abay Times said the camp, named Hayiq Jari 2 Turk, was at Jari near Hayk in South Wollo and sheltered people who had fled Oromia. It placed the attack amid Amhara’s conflict between federal forces and Fano fighters, which it said has continued since 2023, without establishing that the conflict caused the strike. The outlet also said residents have reported civilian deaths in previous drone strikes, including schoolchildren earlier this month.
