Protests over household expenses and education have taken place across several European countries as governments face demands for relief alongside high debt, rising borrowing costs and elections in some states, Al Jazeera reported Oct. 22.
In France, student demonstrations focused on crowded classrooms and too few teachers before expanding into a broader public outcry, the outlet reported. The protests add to a pattern of French demonstrations over education and living costs covered previously. Belgium, Italy, Portugal, Spain and Albania have also seen demonstrations in recent weeks, according to Al Jazeera.
The complaints vary by country. Al Jazeera listed housing costs, low wages, fuel prices, education and political accountability among the issues behind the protests. It described a shared concern that earnings are not enough to secure the standard of living people seek.
The demonstrations put pressure on governments to offer relief as they contend with debt and more costly borrowing. In several countries, that pressure is unfolding alongside looming elections, the report said.
