NEW YORK, May 07, 2018 -- (Spring 2018) — Alto Adige - Südtirol is one of the smallest in size, but highest in quality wine regions of Italy. Located at the meeting of Alpine and Mediterranean climates and customs, it is also one of the most multifaceted—in microclimates, elevation, varieties and even language.

Over 20 different grapes, from indigenous to international, are grown across 13,300 acres tended to by 5,000 growers. Vines are rooted in elevations ranging from 600-3,300 ft. and amidst cypress trees in the south to snow capped mountains in the north. Coupled with a mosaic of soils, from volcanic porphyry to limestone, the region offers distinctive varietal expressions from bottle to bottle.
Acreage is dominated by white varieties with the signatures being Pinot Bianco (aka Weissburgunder), Pinot Grigio (aka Ruländer and Grauburgunder) and the native Gewürztraminer. Pinot Nero (aka Blauburgunder) along with the indigenous grapes Schiava (aka Vernatsch) and Lagrein are the main red grapes.
A mix of indigenous and international grapes and a wide diversity of growing conditions lead to wines that are terroir and variety specific, while all sharing a strong mineral-driven regional character.
