The FBI recorded $11.366 billion in reported losses among complaints that mentioned virtual currency in 2025, a broad category that includes more than cryptocurrency investment fraud.

The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) received 1,008,597 complaints across internet crime categories, 17% more than the 859,532 recorded in 2024. It identified 181,565 complaints with a cryptocurrency descriptor.

IC3 applies the cryptocurrency tag when a complaint mentions virtual currency. The tag is for tracking; the report classifies each complaint under one crime type. The $11.366 billion total therefore covers reported losses in complaints with that descriptor; it does not establish that cryptocurrency caused every loss or that each case involved investment fraud.

The FBI separately recorded 61,559 complaints of cryptocurrency investment fraud, with $7.228 billion in reported losses. That narrower category is distinct from the broader descriptor count, which can apply to complaints assigned different crime types. The FBI’s cryptocurrency complaint figures were covered in an earlier EconoTimes report.

Across all internet crime complaints, reported losses reached $20.877 billion, up 26% from 2024. Cyber-enabled fraud accounted for 452,868 complaints and $17.697 billion in losses, or 85% of the overall total.

Among age groups listed for complaints with a cryptocurrency descriptor, people 60 and older had the highest reported losses, at $4.432 billion. The figure measures losses reported in those complaints; the descriptor by itself does not show that cryptocurrency fraud caused them.
