FantETHy blockchain sports game triumphs Thomson Reuters HackETHon

Football on the blockchain – FantETHy, a fantasy sports game implemented in smart contracts that run on Ethereum allowing users to create their own fantasy leagues, have won the Thomson Reuters HackETHon.

The three-day HackETHon event took place at Thomson Reuters headquarters in London’s Canary Wharf, where numerous teams were formed to code on the spot ideas, build a basic prototype and compete for the winning spot.

According to reports by cryptocoinsnews.com, FantETHy was created in two days by David Acton, David Coleman, Andrew Smith and others. It was created in order to disrupt the huge fantasy sports market that has 56.8 million players in North America, generating yearly revenue of $2 billion and growing.

“The game allows you to pick a virtual team of real athletes, with points awarded based on performance. The user with most points at the end of the league receives a financial reward,” said the report by CCN.

Since each league is a smart contract, payments are quick and the smart contract code can be verified by the users themselves. According to David Acton, the team plans to have the first football game on the blockchain in a move to take the project further.

The HackETHon saw numerous presentations including Nick Johnson, Software Engineer at Ethereum Foundation who presented BlockHooks – a new project that allows broadcasting blockchain events on social media. Apart from this, Jack Gavingan from Zcash presented on blockchain security and privacy and Péter Szilágyi, software developer at Ethereum’s Foundation, addressed lessons on smart contract security.

“We had really great discussions with a lot of people and I think we’ve got some nice projects put together in this tiny amount of time too. So, I think it was an overall success,” Szilágyi told CCN.
