Filecoin Upgrade Ties Later Block Reward Increases to Verified Payments

The first service-share increase has no volume test; a separate model estimates completed vesting schedules will reduce the daily flow of new FIL by about 75%.

Filecoin’s Oct. 19 Solstice upgrade will redirect a growing share of block rewards to storage service operators over time, with later increases tied to verified customer payments.

At activation, the service stream receives 5% of rewards and consensus mining gets 95%. During the first quarter, the service share rises to 10% without a payment-volume test. Later increases come in five-percentage-point steps when quarterly Filecoin Pay volume meets verifiable dollar thresholds. The first gated step is from 10% to 15%, based on second-quarter volume after its verification window closes.

FIP-0118 sets a 50% floor for the consensus share. Registered service orchestrators receive service rewards in proportion to verified payment volume, while service allocation that is not earned is burned. As the service share grows, consensus-focused providers receive a smaller direct share, subject to that floor.

The proposal says the earlier Fil+ system depended on human review, which could slow decisions and leave room for gaming. FIP-0118 uses on-chain Filecoin Pay activity as a measure of demand. It says the reward-stream design drew inspiration from Bittensor and similar incentive networks.

Separately, the scheduled releases tied to Protocol Labs and Filecoin Foundation allocations are complete, Filecoin said in its Oct. 15 announcement. A FilecoinTLDR model estimates that ending those releases will reduce the daily flow of new FIL entering circulation by about 75%. That estimate measures the effect of vesting ending; FIP-0118 addresses how block rewards are divided.

The Lotus v1.37.0 release notes schedule the mainnet upgrade for Monday, Oct. 19, at 8:59:30 a.m. EDT (12:59:30 UTC).
