A rooftop fire at New Delhi’s North Block was extinguished Monday, Oct. 26, without casualties, after a smoke report brought six fire engines to the historic government complex.

A Delhi Fire Service official told the Press Trust of India (PTI) that the service received the call at 1:40 a.m. EDT (11:10 a.m. IST) and dispatched the engines. The fire service said the blaze was extinguished and there were no casualties.

The service’s account described a rooftop air-conditioning boiler catching fire while welding work was underway. It characterized a short circuit as the reported trigger. Aaj Tak, citing police, reported that an old plastic water tank caught fire, giving a different account of what burned.

Rajya Sabha MP Milind Deora wrote on X that he noticed smoke behind North Block while traveling to Parliament.

On Feb. 13, 2026, India’s Cabinet approved shifting offices from North and South Blocks, with both buildings designated for the Yuge Yugeen Bharat National Museum.
