Flavio Bolsonaro Pledges to Respect Brazil Election Result

Brazilian Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, the leading opposition candidate in the country’s presidential race, has pledged to respect the outcome of the October election and abide by Brazil’s existing electoral rules.

Bolsonaro, a right-wing lawmaker and the eldest son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, made the commitment during an interview with TV Globo’s Jornal Nacional, Brazil’s most-watched television newscast.

“I will respect the electoral process; I will respect the results,” Bolsonaro said on Friday, seeking to reassure voters about his position ahead of the presidential election.

His comments draw particular attention because of the political legacy of his father. Jair Bolsonaro is serving a 27-year prison sentence after being convicted of attempting to overturn his defeat to leftist President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in the 2022 presidential election.

A panel of Brazil’s Supreme Court convicted the former president last September of plotting a coup aimed at keeping him in power following the election loss. Jair Bolsonaro had also repeatedly questioned the reliability of Brazil’s electronic voting system, fueling controversy over the country’s election procedures.

Flavio Bolsonaro also outlined some of his policy priorities if elected president. He said his administration would seek to grant amnesty to people convicted over the January 2023 unrest in Brasilia.

During those riots, supporters of Jair Bolsonaro stormed and vandalized key government buildings, including the presidential palace, Congress and the Supreme Court.

The senator also sought to distance himself from the U.S. government’s July decision to impose tariffs on Brazilian goods over allegations of unfair trade practices.

The Trump administration had previously introduced tariffs against Brazil last year, citing what Washington described as a “witch hunt” targeting Jair Bolsonaro during his criminal trial. Those duties were subsequently removed.

Flavio Bolsonaro’s election pledge could become an important issue in Brazil’s presidential campaign as voters weigh his political platform and his relationship with his father’s controversial legacy.
