Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister said a $2,500 debt collection motivated Wednesday’s fatal attack at Citibank’s Tampa-area campus, The Independent reported; a company employee and the gunman died.
Florida police identified Jacob Pearson, 35, as the gunman, according to The Independent. Chronister said Pearson called an attorney affiliated with Citibank about three hours before the shooting and threatened to shoot up the office unless a court hearing over his debt was canceled.
After driving roughly 90 miles from Orlando, Pearson crashed his car through a fence and into a courtyard, then got out and shot Leann Selman, a 41-year-old Citibank human resources employee, Chronister said. An executive on Citibank’s armed security team shot Pearson five times. Pearson later died at a hospital.
Chronister said Pearson had ammunition for 90 shots, fired 15 before his rifle malfunctioned, then returned to his car to retrieve a handgun.
The account adds details to EconoTimes’ earlier coverage of the fatal active-threat incident at Citibank’s Sabal Center in Tampa.
