A former Rwandan sergeant who later opposed President Paul Kagame was found decapitated near Uganda’s capital, prompting a murder investigation after relatives identified his body, AFP reported.
Ugandan police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke said the man was about 50 and investigators had not recovered his head. The remains were found in Luwala, outside Kampala. Police said the killing likely happened between late Oct. 16 and early Oct. 17.
Kabera had been living in Uganda after leaving Rwanda several years earlier, AFP reported. His YouTube channel, Major Robert TV, had 144,000 subscribers and featured a song praising opposition figure Victoire Ingabire, who had been imprisoned repeatedly.
After Kabera left Rwanda, authorities designated him a fugitive and accused him of corrupting a minor. He denied the charge. His brother, Victor Agaba, told AFP that Kabera had no trouble in Uganda, adding, “Our problem comes from home.” Agaba called the army’s criminal case against his brother a “witch-hunt.”
AFP also recounted earlier killings of Rwandan figures abroad. Former army lieutenant Revocat Karemangingo was shot dead in Mozambique in 2021, while Seif Bamporiki was killed by gunfire in South Africa that year. Patrick Karegeya, a former Rwandan intelligence chief, was strangled in a South African hotel room in 2014. AFP reported that former general Faustin Kayumba Nyamwasa, who founded the Rwanda National Congress opposition party with Karegeya, has survived multiple attempts on his life.
Ugandan police are continuing the investigation.
