Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said authorities made 135 arrests nationwide during Oct. 24 demonstrations over school funding and living costs, amid a nationwide security deployment.

Al Jazeera reported that France deployed police in the tens of thousands. The outlet said authorities restricted Paris’ main march to the capital’s southeastern edge, away from central districts. Officials said their aim was to prevent further looting, car fires and attacks on public buildings.

After the Oct. 17 protests over living costs and school conditions, France’s Interior Ministry reported nearly 2,400 arrests, according to EconoTimes’ earlier account of the nationwide tally.

France had previously planned to deploy 70,000 officers. CFDT General Secretary Marylise Leon told TF1 that refusing permits for additional rallies could increase public frustration; EconoTimes covered the deployment plan and Leon’s warning about permit denials.
