Franceinfo reported Monday that France’s National Police Inspectorate (IGPN) opened four inquiries into alleged police conduct linked to the Oct. 17 demonstrations, including two cases involving minors with severe injuries.
In Saint-Étienne, one minor lost a hand, Franceinfo reported. The Loire prefect said the case was assigned jointly to the police inspectorate and the gendarmerie inspectorate, Le Monde reported. Another minor lost sight in one eye after an injury in Mulhouse, while a protester in Paris filed a complaint over a head injury, Franceinfo reported. Franceinfo gave no details of the fourth inquiry.
The inquiries follow Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez’s statement that police lost control in some cities during the demonstrations, as EconoTimes previously reported.
At a Senate hearing on Oct. 13, Nuñez said the IGPN had opened 36 inquiries since student protests began. He said four involved mutilating injuries and six concerned injuries he described as significant. Those figures predate the Oct. 17 demonstrations and are separate from the four inquiries Franceinfo reported Monday.
