French lawmaker Francois Kalfon and eight colleagues asked the European Commission to curb imports of BYD vehicles, arguing that connected-car sensors might capture sensitive information around military sites and strategic infrastructure.

The lawmakers proposed classifying BYD as a high-risk supplier under EU cybersecurity legislation and restricting imports. The legislation remains under negotiation.

Kalfon cited restrictions in Britain and Poland and the Kadena restriction as examples for EU action. The Japan Times described the Kadena measure as security-related and reported that U.S. Forces in Japan had not identified its specific trigger.
