Facing corruption probe at home, the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu plans to hold an early election next year well before the scheduled end of his government in order to strengthen his grip on power at a time when his popularity remains high over the foreign policy victory over Jerusalem, thanks to President Trump, who recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
The mushrooming corruption scandal has plagued Netanyahu since 2016. The latest allegation suggests that one of his closest advisers had sought to bribe a judge into dropping a criminal investigation involving the prime minister’s wife. The investigation began in 2016 to look into valuable presents and gifts received allegedly received by Mr. Prime Minister and his wife. Prime Minister Netanyahu’s current government term would end in November, however, he hinted at party members on Sunday that he would initiate the election once the holiday recess ends in October and the election could be held as early as January.
