Gulf News reported that Dr. Anwar Mohammed Gargash, UAE president’s diplomatic adviser, criticized Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf over Lana Nusseibeh’s U.N. nomination, saying his comments conflicted with the body’s role in settling disputes.
Gargash made the remarks in a post on X, according to Gulf News. He said Nusseibeh’s qualifications, views and bid for the U.N.’s top job could be scrutinized. He added that objections from hard-line voices were not surprising for a candidate associated with diplomacy and bridging differences.
Gargash characterized Ghalibaf’s comments as lacking objectivity and disregarding the U.N.’s purpose of encouraging dialogue and resolving disputes. He said the organization should not be used to “perpetuate hostilities and settle scores.” Gargash also suggested the posts might have been written by Ghalibaf’s social media account manager and not reflect the speaker’s personal views.
