German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul arrived in Kyiv on Monday, reaffirming Berlin’s strong commitment to supporting Ukraine in its ongoing war with Russia. His visit comes shortly after a massive Russian assault involving hundreds of drones and missiles, prompting urgent calls from President Volodymyr Zelenskiy for enhanced Western military aid, especially air defense systems.
"We will continue to stand firmly by Ukraine’s side so that it can continue to defend itself successfully—with modern air defense and other weapons, with humanitarian and economic aid," Wadephul said in a statement released by the German foreign ministry.
The timing of the visit is significant as concerns grow over Washington’s wavering support for Ukraine. With the U.S. Congress locked in political gridlock, Europe is under increasing pressure to assume a larger role in ensuring Ukraine’s defense capabilities remain intact.
Germany is currently the second-largest military donor to Ukraine after the United States. Berlin’s contributions include advanced weaponry, including IRIS-T air defense systems, tanks, and ammunition, as well as vital humanitarian and economic assistance aimed at maintaining Ukraine’s resilience on both the military and civilian fronts.
President Zelenskiy has repeatedly urged Western allies to speed up deliveries of air defense systems, highlighting that delays only benefit Russia. Sunday’s large-scale Russian attack further underscored Ukraine’s vulnerability and the urgent need for reinforcements.
Wadephul’s visit symbolizes a clear message of solidarity from Berlin at a time when Ukrainian forces are engaged in a critical phase of the conflict. His statements reinforce Germany’s strategic stance to continue backing Ukraine militarily, diplomatically, and financially—strengthening European unity and support as the war enters a pivotal period.
