Police in Germany arrested two Belarusian men suspected of planning to torch a building or critical-infrastructure site near Nuremberg; Der Spiegel reported that they were acting for Russia.
The Munich General Prosecutor’s Office said Oct. 28 that the men, ages 39 and 50, had been paid to act for a foreign government or organization. They have been in custody since Oct. 7. Prosecutors did not name the country.
Der Spiegel also reported that Romanian authorities are investigating the men over a suspected arson at an industrial park in Brasov on the night of Sept. 14. The magazine said a defense manufacturer that makes grenade launchers and ammunition operates at the site.
Romanian organized crime prosecutors are seeking extradition of the two men arrested in Germany and a Ukrainian man detained in Poland. All three are suspected of involvement in the Brasov arson, the prosecutors said.
Moscow has continued to reject German and other claims that Russia is behind sabotage operations. EconoTimes previously reported Berlin’s claim of Russian involvement in a separate drone attempt at Leipzig/Halle Airport; the criminal investigation there was continuing.
