German police detained a 21-year-old man at Frankfurt Airport after he returned from abroad, in a case alleging he tried to join Daesh and prepare a serious act of violence, Anadolu Agency reported Monday.

The Federal Prosecutor’s Office identified him as Joshua W. and alleged he sought to join Daesh outside Germany and prepare violence that could endanger the state. Police detained him Friday evening as he entered the country, Anadolu reported.

Prosecutors say his journey began in January 2025 with a flight from Berlin to Ethiopia. They allege he intended to enter Somalia, join Daesh there, receive military training and attack people he considered nonbelievers. Unable to cross into Somalia, W. traveled to Pakistan to try to join the group there, prosecutors said. He was arrested in Pakistan in February 2025.

The Federal Court of Justice had issued an arrest warrant. An investigating judge at the court carried out the warrant Saturday and ordered W. held in pretrial detention.
