Germany’s Federal Foreign Office urged travelers in France to avoid demonstrations where possible after violence during nationwide protests, warning that further gatherings and unrest could occur in the coming days.

The guidance has been in effect since Oct. 18, one day after the Oct. 17 demonstrations. The Gendarmerie nationale reported protests across France that day and violent incidents in numerous cities. The Foreign Office also urged travelers to act cautiously.

Protests have disrupted a major visitor attraction: student demonstrators kept the Louvre closed on Oct. 19. The museum said reservations for that date would be refunded. The student protests concerned school conditions and living costs.

The travel advisory also warns that people who remain at unauthorized and violent demonstrations after being instructed to leave could face fines and claims for damages. The Foreign Office said further demonstrations and possible disorder could not be ruled out in the coming days.
