German lawmakers and federal officials were warned that mercenary spyware may have targeted their iPhones, Digital Minister Karsten Wildberger said Sunday; Apple’s alerts did not say whether an attack succeeded, ARD reported.

In a letter reviewed by ARD, the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) said Apple threat notifications had reached iPhones since Oct. 29 and concerned an attempt to compromise the devices with mercenary spyware. The agency said it had no further information about what prompted the notices and advised recipients to take precautions against a possible compromise.

Wildberger said the BSI had contacted recipients in writing but did not identify them or provide further details.
