Germany and Mongolia signed a joint declaration in Berlin on Oct. 20 that makes renewable energy and the green transition priorities in their efforts to expand trade and economic cooperation.
The agreement followed talks between German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Mongolian President Ukhnaa Khurelsukh. Ministerial officials signed the document, Mongolia’s president’s office said.
The presidents discussed ways to increase trade and investment, including cooperation in industry and mining. They also considered possible work on artificial intelligence and cybersecurity, according to the Mongolian office.
The declaration calls for continued support for the German-Mongolian Institute for Resources and Technology (GMIT). It also commits the countries to expanding scholarship programs for Mongolian students and cooperating on vocational training.
The energy commitment builds on an earlier pledge. Germany and Mongolia established a strategic partnership on Feb. 7, 2024, during Steinmeier’s visit to Mongolia, and a declaration issued during that visit included renewable energy cooperation.
Khurelsukh is scheduled to meet German Chancellor Friedrich Merz at 7 a.m. ET (11:00 UTC) on Oct. 21. The German government said their talks will cover bilateral relations, economic policy and international security.
